Thanksgiving is just around the corner. For many, it is a joyous time full of food, family and football. For others, it is another reason to eat unhealthy amounts of unhealthy food. But Thanksgiving doesn’t need to be that way. There are plenty of ways to stay healthy and fit this holiday season. Here are a few ways to do just that.
Make a healthy Thanksgiving dinner
Admittedly, this may be the hardest thing to do, considering: 1) you might not have enough time to completely scrap your original menu for a healthy one, and 2) your healthy food choices might not necessarily be welcome by everyone else at the Thanksgiving dinner table. However, now you can use this bit of advice to plan (and prepare your family members ahead of time) for next year.
Look for different types of recipes that stress healthy ingredients. Look into a crudite turkey (an appetizer made of raw vegetables in the shape of a turkey), rosemary-roasted potatoes, mashed cauliflower (low in carbs) or even vegetable gravy. Thanksgiving is notorious for heavy and unhealthy foods, but it doesn’t need to be that way.
Eat in the morning
People tend to skip eating breakfast in order to save for the real feast. This is not a good idea for the sole fact that by skipping breakfast, you are more likely to overindulge during dinner in order to compensate. Overindulging on a Thanksgiving dinner is just a flat out bad idea.
Use a small plate
The smaller the plate, the smaller your portions. It seems as though America has always struggled with portion control. If you can stick to eating smaller portions, then you’re on your way to a healthier Thanksgiving.
Clean the house
This may sound strange at first, but it stands to reason. If you are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll need to clean the house. Cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, living room and dining room can burn quite a few calories and might just be the kind of low-level exercise that your body needs.
Thanksgiving is a great time to spend with those you love. But it can be an easy trap to eat unhealthily. Follow these tips and you should have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
